A playthrough of Asmik's 1991 NES game, WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Even with a Nintendo Power feature and high ratings (they gave it a 4.0 for graphics/sound and theme/fun - not commonly given ratings for anything not from the most prominent developers and publishers!), WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth is a game that's been tragically underlooked and deserves a lot more recognition than it's accustomed to getting. Building off of the same multi-genre game-play platform featured in Golgo 13: Top Secret Mission (and not so coincidentally, the same man was behind a large portion of the creative development for both titles), it does a lot of unexpected things with its elements, and with a surprising amount of polish on most of them.

The gameplay, featuring shoot 'em up action (horizontal and vertical), first-person RPG style fights, and platforming action, presents its mechanics in a way far more refined than Golgo 13 ever did, though the story's shift from international crime to environmental awareness might put some people off.

It's a fantastic game, overall. It's got a few niggling flaws - it's easy and the controls are awkward, but the presentation and format (fantastic music, good graphics, neat story) come together in such a way that makes it so much more than the sum of its parts. It really is too bad that WURM was buried under release delays, allowing it to get crushed under the launch excitement of the SNES.

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a fresh feeling platformer on the NES.

Finally, I would like to thank Angela-san: I know it's been a long time since we've spoken, but your insights into the process and meaning of Vazolder's development really gave me a much greater sense of appreciation for it and what it represents! If you see this, I hope all is well with you, my friend and teacher. I also hope that my video does your masterwork justice.
