The WORST DLC characters in Street Fighter 5 (Re-upload from 2021)
12A good Street Fighter 5 DLC character should make new players want to jump in and existing players want to keep playing. Which characters over SF5's various seasons brought about apathy instead of hype?
Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition's 16 base roster characters have been the minority since the latter part of Season 3, and there are now 26 playable DLC fighters on the character select screen. Of these 26, some have made quite a splash and garnered quite a following while others have had a relatively lackluster impact.
While the broad term "worst" is going to have a subjective nature to it no matter how you slice it, I'd like to quickly establish what exactly I mean when I say "worst DLC characters" when it comes to Street Fighter 5. Perhaps my approach can be inferred from the following statement: The biggest failure a DLC character can encounter is an apathetic audience
A character's relative strength really can't be divorced from this kind of conversation, but we're not talking strictly tier list standings for this discussion. The approach here is much more about the concept of strategically using DLC to bring in new potential players and get those already playing to stick around longer, and some characters definitely did not pull their weight.
To create this list I looked at two key factors with the above : how much of a splash characters made upon reveal/entry to the game, and how popular they've proven to be via CFN usage stats.
In essence, this is a kind of popularity contest as seen through a business lens, but even then not all characters are judged by the same rubric. Returning characters already have reputations and fan bases, and so they have a higher bar to live up to than avatars brand new to playable rosters. As such, there's more of an expectation that certain returning DLC fighters would bring more potential hype than SF5 originals.
