Allusion, Illusion, & Abstraction - Death of a Wish Review
Death of a Wish discusses systems of oppression, discrimination, religious fascism, tyranny, mental health, and abuse plainly and openly in the game’s dialogue and poetry. On occasion, these themes are shown on screen but those occasions are rare, and are often abstracted by the game’s audio-visual presentation. Abstraction has been employed all over Death of a Wish and the developer’s previous game Lucah: Born of a Dream, but has it been done to such a degree that the games are difficult to read? Are the themes still visible? Is the game itself still visible amongst all of the abstraction? And would these topics not benefit from a more upfront, straightforward presentation?
