Toki: Going Ape Spit Game Sample - Genesis/MD
Original Air Date: April 15th, 2009
This game has such a funny name... anyway, this is one of the few games I still remember from my youth (listen to me... I'm far from an old timer). When I was young, I never actually played this game, but I'm pretty sure I saw it on T.V. on the "Nick Arcade" show. I used to think even back then that a lot of the games they had to play were so easy, or at least what was required of them to do in the show. BUT... that's not important. I was feeling nostalgic and decided to put up a video for this game.
One would expect Toki to just be a dumb hop and bop game, but there's a little more than meets the eye. In the year 2050, a movement began and grew steadily for several years after. A wave of people, disgusted with their lives dictated by clocks and schedules, abandoned their homes and jobs and started over. They longed to experience the freedom and peace they felt nature had to offer. To Dr. Andrew Stark, a reknowned genetic engineer, throwing away a civilization that took thousands of years to build seemed like a terrible waste.
He refused to give up his possessions and went against such change, and was eventually kidnapped and imprisoned for threating the new world order. He was lost for roughly a year and people thought he died. Life simply moved on. As time passed, conditions grew harsh and many people weren't able to survive the rigors of life without civilization. One who did was Wanda.
Stricken with an illness soon after her birth, she was found and nursed back to health by Toki, a young man born and raised in the wild. Wanda fell in love with him and they became inseparable. But one day, the sky grew dark and the land seemed more ominous than usual. Wanda is captured by a flying hand that belongs to none other than the now-twisted Dr. Stark who was believed to be dead! Not only has he become evil, but he's learned magic? Yes indeed. He's turned Toki into an ape just because he's bitter. Now you gotta save your girl as a monkey.
Neat backstory generally from the manual (stripped down a little), but now that I've bored you half to death, Toki: Going Ape Spit is generally your run of the mill platformer. There's nothing at all wrong with the game with the exception that Toki moves slow as molasses, but it doesn't particularly make the game harder as a result. He can somehow shoot various projectiles and put on sneakers to move faster and jump higher. Enjoy.
