Phelios Game Sample - Genesis/MD
Tired of all the spaceship shooters or army men action games? Probably not, but Phelios is a slight change of pace and a pretty basic but affordable and welcome addition to the Sega Genesis/MD shooter lineup. Based loosely on Greek Mythology, you are the knight Apollo, the god of the sun, who sets off on his winged steed Pegasus to rescue his lover, Artemis, the goddess of the moon, from the dark lord Typhon. The game doesn't have much in the way of power-ups or flair, but it has a few varied level designs and lots of enemies to take down. However, regardless of how you feel about the gameplay or presentation, the game makes it perfectly clear what the player's main motivation is for going on this dangerous trip, and it has nothing to do with great design or a lack thereof.
Artemis, the shapely goddess that she is, will appear throughout the game in bondage, relaying messages to your hero and slowly get tortured by Typhon (in this case, becoming scantily clad by losing parts of her clothing as you go along...). That Typhon sure is a evil sleazeball all right. Oh well, what are ya gonna do? It's a slightly above average shooter IMO with "perks". It's not bad, but with competition like Gaiares, Lightening Force and M.U.S.H.A., it had to have something that set it apart. I'd rather have a little cladness in my shooters than have it all and end up with Divine Sealing!! The small hard-to-understand spoken segments in the game are a nice touch too.
The basic idea is that you're basically equipped with your ultimate weapon from the start. Apollo's sword can charge up fireballs that rip through most enemies with relative ease and he gets a few rare power-ups outside of speed-ups and options. Towards the end of the game, you will have an opportunity to collect letters to get the ultimate weapon, Phelios, which is capable of slaying Typhon. Enjoy.
