TriGunXSword's How not to Dark Souls: The Second Attempt Playthrough part 17 - The Four Kings
This fight is among the hardest in the base game, and of all the new game + fights it's probably the worst one by a large margin. The Four Kings themselves aren't so tough on their own but the danger here is having to fight more than one at a time, which only happens with a low dps weapon. Pretty much all of their sword attacks can be straight up tanked if you're standing close to them, as their weapon only does full damage if there's any distance between you and the boss. The only dangerous attacks they have individually are the magic based ones, and the nearly unavoidable grab. If more than one king spawns, there's a good chance you'll get either pelted with magic, or hit from behind by their incredibly long reaching swords. Basically this fight is nearly unwinnable if you're on the losing side of the dps race.
The reward for killing this boss before placing the Lordvessel is the ability to meet the other Primordial Serpent. If you do Four Kings after placing the Lordvessel, you will never meet this serpent who tells a slightly different tale from what Frampt has woven but the path before you stays the same regardless. The only decision that affects the ending you get is whether you sit at the first flame after beating Gwyn, or if you choose to abandon it. It should also be noted that finding this second serpent is the only way to join the darkwraith covenant.
Since we're at kind of an important turning point in the game, I decide to read up on the item descriptions that I've been largely ignoring up to this point. I know I'm still missing a ton of items but I'll likely do a second reading just before the final boss to try and piece some things together myself. I'm well aware there's already several people who cover lore but I'd rather experience the lore myself before I look at their stuff.
