Turning Photos into a 3D Object with RealityCapture
In this episode I'll show you how I've turned a series of images into a real life 3D object with the magic of phtogrammetry. It's a process by which some clever software works out the angles from which an object has been taken, and reverse-engineers it to get positional and lens information. From that it can then reconstruct both the 3D mesh and the texture data. We used this process to bring real life objects into our project that we simply didn't find on any of the 3D marketplaces.
There are many such softwares on the market and most of them cost a pretty penny, so I thought I'd try this free one which is called RealityCapture. It's part of the EPIC suite of tools, and is available for free from the EPIC launcher. The UI isn't anything to write home about, but it gets the job done and the integrated help is excellent. I highly encourage you to give this a shot, it truly feels like "receiving data from another dimension". Also available for mobile phones, so you can try to scan and upload on the go (I think - don't quote me on that).
