Make Decals in Blender with the Shrink Wrap Modifier
Today I have a quick video for you I've made for Jeff the other day, in which I'm talking about the Shrink Wrap modifier. We've talked about the different ways of overlaying a texture onto an existing textured object, and I mentioned that some render engines and 3D apps have the concept of a decal. Those are projections from one side, very cheap to render, and great for thins like bullet holes or footsteps in video games. Daz Studio and Unreal Engine support them natively, as does Substance Painter, but Blender does not. However, we can do the next best thing there, which is the Shrink Wrap Modifier, and thought a little demonstration was in order.
Shrink Wrap is nice for various crazy things, like floating objects on an ocean surface, reusing an existing poster on curved surfaces, and even to fit objects to organic shapes that would otherwise not fit properly. Have fun with it!
