Ubuntu 21.04 New Features (Tentative)
For the next couple of months, features will start pouring in for Ubuntu 21.04 as the development progresses. At this very moment, the feature list is not even finalized. But, we can guess the versions of certain packages.
The Linux Kernel 5.10 or 5.11 should be included in the Ubuntu 21.04 as default. Because Linux 5.10 is already expected by end of this year. And Linux 5.11 will be ready by the time Ubuntu 21.04 hits feature freeze by end of Feb 2021.
The default desktop environment – GNOME 40 will be included. GNOME 3.38 which is the current version already defaults in Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla. GNOME team recently changed the versioning scheme from GNOME 3.38 to GNOME 40. GNOME 40 current is in development which is expected to be released on March 24, 2021. The GNOME 40 beta is expected around mid-Feb 2021. So, it would be included.
Other features should include the latest version of GNOME native applications as available alongside pre-loaded apps such as Thunderbird, Firefox.
Ubuntu’s Ubiquity installer might allow users to encrypt their EXT4 partitions without being forced to use the LVM partitioning scheme. If this happens, the general users available the full disk encryption by default with the EXT4 partitioning scheme.
