Ultima IX - Tidbits #59: Diamond in the Rough via shop hacking
By editing the book-en.flx file in the static folder, one can alter not only the language of the books, but the complete stock of the shops, too. Of course only if one has a backup and looks beyond simple notepad.
I used it to insert three objects that exist in the game code, but are not obtainable via intended ways. The unpolished and polished lighthouse gems that go in the Britain lighthouse are there, but since it's already placed, you can't get more ingame.
So, I checked the reaction of the gem cutter. Unfortunately, Cameron doesn't recognize it as an unpolished lighthouse gem.
Then I show that if the game can't load the contents of a book, it displays a generic message. It's in English, despite the fact that I have the German translation, so it surely comes from some other place in the files. I'd say it's because my meddling with the file, but I kept seeing empty books late game (from entering the final dungeon) anyway.
Final notes:
Hacking items into shops surely can be used for some fun. Does any Gargoyle conversation change if one "buys" the Winged Medal at the start of the game? Do the gray statue do anything anywhere? "Buying" late game items early without accessing their areas with the flying cheat leads to anythig interesting?
