Looking at the defence bar with attention, one can realize that glitch-wielding a weapon in the shield slot actually does have a truly gameplay affecting function besides altering the right hand weapon: each one increases the defence value with a varying amount.
It seems that the stronger the weapon is, the more defence it provides when glitch-wielded this way. So, the glass sword seems to be the best one and fortunately it's available very early in the game.

So, now you can have a two-handed weapon's strength with a very good "shield's" defence, probably also serves for speedruns.
Just don't glitch-wield non-weapons in that slot, because they not only don't give any defence, they also just provide bare-handed fighting.
Also watch out for equipped item deletion and crashes when you do decide to switch weapons. Best is manually removing them from both hand, then pressing TAB onc or twice. Else the newly equipped item can be glitched, too, and the previous glitch-wielded object can just vanish. (Or shoot up into the air, as Cid found, it seems to vary also according to configuration.)
