In recent years there have been many breakthroughs in Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) but few have dealt with decreasing the affective filter. Most programs are geared towards self-selective learning, leaving school students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs behind. This talk will address how technology can be used to decrease the affective filter in school age ELLs (English Language Learners) through the use of virtual environments (VE), avatars, and animated pedagogical agents (APA). It will conclude by proposing a possible virtual world that combines these technologies to create an optimal learning environment for school age language learning.
