Vagrant Story - Spears Only Minimalist Run - Part 1: In Which Ashley Punches Dogs
As Vagrant Story is a very slow-moving methodical game, I strongly recommend you watch this video series at 1.5x speed.
The video essentially ends when I step into the save point at 8:29. From that point, I'm waiting out the HP recovery.
My first upload for a new video series I'm working on. This is a modification of the original Minimalist run I developed for this game (details here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/914326-vagrant-story/76252918). I may go back and make a series out of that as well.
The rules of this run are as follows:
No Battle Abilities
No Break Arts
No Warlock spells
No Status Effects on enemies (i.e. silence, paralysis, curse). This does not include debuffs (Degenerate, Leadbones, etc.)
No random item drops (picking up items that drop at 100% is allowed)
No using consumables (except Grimoires)
Base Stats only
No Farming (Affinity/Class)
Spears only
The "base stats" requirement is a little tricky as it's impossible to prevent Ashley from gaining stats throughout a run. In order to simulate base stats, I will make certain that I only ever receive "HP+" on the stat wheel and will manually enforce a rule saying my HP cannot drop below MAX-250. For future uploads I'll post a note saying what my HP cutoff is for that particular video.
I slightly bend the No Farming rule on a couple of occasions to convert a weapon before a particular boss. However, when I do so I rely strictly on spawns I encounter naturally, I do not deliberately trigger additional respawns. The way I bend the rules is by using a non-optimal weapon setup, so that I do less damage to the enemies I have available and therefore milk a few extra hits.
Some of you might be wondering why "Spears Only", as that's my most arbitrary restriction. After my original Minimalist run I wanted to try to ratchet things up even further. The only rule modification I could come up with was to enforce only a single weapon category. Spears are the only weapon category which includes all Types. There is a low level Piercing/Blunt/Edged option, as well as a high level Piercing/Blunt/Edged option. Spears also preclude the use of shields, which adds a big difficulty spike when enforcing the "250 HP" rule.
At this point in the game I do not have my first spear. I could be using a shield but I decided to go a step further and not. That's why there's such a long lag time at the end, while I wait for my HP to recover. Under normal circumstances I would not have taken so much damage for this stretch.
