Valheim And Its Realism Is What Makes It A Great Survival Game | My Fav Thing In (Valheim Gameplay)
Valheim is the latest survival game to take over the world, and after an hour of chopping down some trees and killing some greylings, it’s easy to see why. Developer Iron Gate haven’t dipped their toes into the survival games market, they’ve stuck on some viking gear first and then thrown their entire selves into it. At first, you might look at Valheim and think it’s a stripped-back survival game, but as you’ll hear during this Valheim gameplay – and as our Ollie Toms discovered when he gave it a go – there’s much more to Valheim once you dive right in. So, Colm asked RPS’ best viking, Ollie, to tell him about his favourite thing in Valheim.

While not necessarily a Valheim game review – that’ll come once the game properly launches – this Valheim Early Access review should shed some light on why millions of people have been playing the viking survival game. For Ollie, it’s all about the simulations. For example, Valheim building is different to some other survival games in that you have to make sure your house is structurally sound. So, there’s a big difference between a Minecraft build and a Valheim build, as Ollie explains during this Valheim gameplay.
But that’s only scratching the surface. The sea and the waves is another thing that impresses Ollie. As well as the beauty of the water lapping at the shore, Valheim sailing really feels like you’re on water, wrestling with nature to get from A to B. But you’re wrestling with everything in Valheim, really. As you’ll hear during this Valheim Early Access review, even chimneys are important!
As mentioned above, we don’t have a traditional Valheim review on Rock Paper Shotgun: The Website; not yet, anyway. That’ll come once the game is out of Early Access. However, if you do want to check out all the great Valheim guides, features and articles written by everyone at the RPS treehouse, be sure to visit our dedicated Valheim hub (https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/valheim).
My Favourite Thing In... is a video series where Colm chats to one of the lovely RPS writers about their absolute favourite thing in a spang new video game they’ve been playing. In some cases, the writer will have to think long and hard about their choice, because the game they’ve been playing mightn’t be that great, while better games will have multiple things for them to pick.
