Released 12/07/85, Volguard II for Famicom is a horizontal space shooter with mecha combat elements. This sequel to dB-Soft's Volguard, originally released in 1984 for Japanese computers like the MSX, was not as well received as its predecessor despite its improved graphics and sound. Volguard II never made it to the NES, or any other system for that matter, unless you count the Wii Virtual Console in Japan. One of the few interesting things about this game is the backstory provided in the manual:

"A scientific weapon created at the end of a developed civilization. The damage caused by the wars occurring in various parts of the Earth has spread to other planets. In ancient times, the highly civilized people who taught civilization to Earthlings and watched over their fate installed a gigantic computer called ``Zygam Bold'' in 19XX, and began managing Earthlings. However, as time passed, some humans were born that were unable to receive control sound waves. They banded together, modified a high-mobility combat mecha developed by their distant ancestors, named it 'Volgard II,' and dispatched it."

The manual also lists an address where you can take a picture of your Hi Score and send it in to receive a medal, which I am dying to see a picture of now:

"Sumitomo Insurance Sapporo Building, Kita 1-jo Nishi 7-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo 060 Davysoft Co., Ltd. 'Volguard II Revolutionary Medal' Section"

I can't say Volguard II is a bad game, but neither can I say it's a good game. The energy depletion mechanic makes no sense and the enemy placement feels a bit random. Some of the sprites are very impressive and unique, but the mecha combat feels clunky and the levels are too repetitive. It fails to stand out among the slew of similar titles released that year.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
