Released 12/7/1985, Spelunker for Famicom is a port by Tamtex of the classic cave exploration game originally developed by Tim Martin and published by MicroGraphics Image for the Atari 8-bit computer. Irem, the Famicom publisher of the Broderbund-presented port (confused yet?), created one of the coolest looking labels of any game cart on the system accented by the red glow of Irem's signature LED.

This game is an enhanced port similar to Broderbund's Lode Runner. Tougher than the original Spelunker and a bit unforgiving, this version is often derided by gamers. However, the aesthetic and sound are much improved over the original. The art style mirrors Broderbund's Lode Runner, and the music sounds amazing. I love the restless ghosts of dead spelunkers, the bat that gets dazed by flares, the phantom blaster that dissolves enemies before your eyes--it all works for me. In my opinion, the controls are more realistic if a bit more frustrating. Try falling six feet with gear on without breaking your legs in a real cave! Derek Yu, creator of Spelunky, was inspired by the game and seems to have enjoyed its difficulty as well. What's not to love here?

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
