Released 12/6/1985, Star Luster for Famicom is a first-person space shooter and real-time strategy game developed and published by Namcot. Taking inspiration from Star Raiders for Atari 800, the aesthetic is both Bosconian and Star Wars. Though it would be ported to the VS System in 1985, it never made it to the NES. I am guessing the enemy resembling the Death Star may have risked an intellectual property battle Namcot did not want to fight.

You are a pilot known only as "Dan" and fly a spaceship named Gaia that must destroy enemy Battura ships before they create a new Big Bang. If you can find keys and hidden planets in the process you will rack up points which increase your rank. Your shield regenerates and your computer, radar, and engine can be fixed and refueled at various bases that also upgrade your photon torpedoes. A timer and other factors determine your final score, and it is even possible to finish with a negative number as I did! The manual says "If you're thinking, 'I can play this game without reading anything!', give it a try." Let's just say this is an understatement. Star Luster is definitely one of the most impressive early Famicom titles, but it was sadly too ahead of its time.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating all the enemies. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using an Aviator 2 controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
