Released 11/27/1985, BurgerTime for Famicom is a port by Namcot of Data East's classic arcade game originally titled "Hamburger" in Japan. You play as Peter Pepper, a chef who must battle killer hot dogs, pickles, and eggs with your trusty pepper shaker, all while trying to prepare a hamburger consisting of beef, lettuce, and tomato. Are you hungry yet? 🍔

🍦, 🍟, and ☕ keep your 🧂 armed, and strategic drops of hamburger buns on enemies and other layers will net you a higher score. They have a vegan version of this game where you assemble a veggie burger, but that can only be accessed via your imagination. But, who knows, maybe that's why there are bits of green in the hamburger meat?

In all likelihood, the green was added to provide a texture and coloring only visible when the TV is adjusted to the settings most Japanese families used on their TVs in the early 80's: low color, dull brightness, high contrast, etc. Television viewing, including gameplay, often happened with little room light present, a strategy to save money on electricity and preserve image quality.

There are many console ports of BurgerTime, but for my money this one is the best. It is just as difficult as the original! The NES and Famicom versions are basically identical, as is the Famicom Disk System version. Along with Pac-Man, Mappy, and Galaxian, Namcot (Namco) made some stellar arcade ports that gave the originals a run for their money.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
