VR Tower Defense with 90s Attitude... but is it FUN?! // Captain Toonhead Quest 2 Gameplay
194Captain Toonhead vs The Punks From Outer Space might just have the longest name of all the new Quest 2 games released this year and it's been a confusing one to unpack on the run-up to release. Presented as an all out explosion of action Captain Toonhead VR is actually a fairly straight forward VR tower defense (a first person tower defense) game with light FPS mechanics and A LOT of late 80s/early 90s Saturday morning kids show attitude. Immediately upon loading the game up I was greeted with things that reminded me of my childhood; dinosaur toys, CRT TVs, dialogue that sounds as if it's been taken straight from my favourite childhood shows, so that led me to believe this game was definitely aimed at me...right? Nostalgia however can only get you so far and quite quickly the game started to feel like it had shown me all it has to offer, a VR tower defense with a whacky story and some pretty hands off gameplay... albeit with tonnes of great style.
This Captain Toonhead Quest 2 gameplay was captured during the first three levels of the campaign which spans 12 missions, during my time with the game I enjoyed the art style but felt like a passive observer of the experience rather than a participant. This is likely due to my general lack of excitement towards the tower defense genre but it's a real shame that players aren't given more freedom to move around and explore the interesting environments, interact with objects in the hub area or roam the battlefield during waves to get up close and personal with the enemy troops. Perhaps it's my fauly, I thought Toonhead was something else entirely and I do hope this VR tower defense game with buckets of style finds an audience who appreciate it for what it is.
