War Thunder: I-16 Type 5 Ishak - Absolutely Aggravating
47Another highly requested review, the I-16 Type 5 at a Battle Rating of 1.7 can face either a bi-plane heavy composition (usually in shorter Ground Strike Stalingrad matches) or a mixture of late bi-planes and early monoplanes. In this review, I examine the Type 5 in the context of the latter, fiercer competition.
Despite its grievances (i.e. poor armament, low top speed, poor high speed handling and high altitude performance), this plane is an can prove to be an absolutely aggravating opponent if allowed to get onto your tail, and into close range. The wing mounted 7.62mm Machine Guns do well at close convergence and the high maneuverability threshold of this aircraft (at 250-350 km/h) enables one to out-maneuver any other monoplane fighter it may face, even the Ki-43 (via combining the incredible roll rate to pair maneuvers, and cutting the throttle simultaneously).
Moreover, despite lacking significant firepower to eliminate bombers, this plane can quickly ascend to higher altitudes and harass enemy bombers into diving to lower altitudes. Just be careful of the low durability of this plane, as it only takes a couple of hits to set it on fire, or rip off a wing.
