Far Cry 2 was one of the very last games to use DirectSound3D in 2008. As such, it gains full 3D positional audio on headphones when the DSOAL mod is used. It sits in stark contrast to the later games in the series (take notes, Ubisoft developers) though I have heard reports from my Discord server users that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon works with X3DAudio HRTF (True 3D Sound for Headphones mod for Skyrim & Fallout 4) at the expense of slightly broken mixing. In any case, playing Far Cry 2 with spatialized audio is fascinating: it feels like a modern FPS more or less, yet it has a level of attention to the sound design that few games today could boast. EAX reverb is sadly ignored, though occlusion effects do play indoors. Only one problem: all voice acting plays from the characters' feet. It's pretty awkward to say the least.
