What If Prince Namor of Atlantis Grew Up On Land? Fen takes the blast meant for her husband and the couple escape to Hawaii, where Fen gives birth before passing on. Namor grows up on land, resenting his Atlantean heritage and feeling like a freak, but his father tells him he has nothing to be ashamed of. Years later, Namor is introduced to his grandfather, King Thakorr, who tells him to come home and accept his royal duties. Namor attacks the king, but the fight is cut short by the Pearl Harbor bombing, where his dad is killed. In his fury, Namor attacks the Japanese squadron, revealing his powers to the army, who induct him into Special Forces, partnered with the original Human Torch. Despite the uneasiness the other soldiers have around them, the duo do everything they can for the war, but during one assault, Torch is taken down by missiles and never found. Much later, Namor is summoned to the North Atlantic, where he finally encounters Atlantis. And finds that it's been taken over by Nazis, who followed in the example of Namor's parents and crossbred with Atlanteans to create a master race and subjugate the original inhabitants. And that they're using Human Torch to power a cannon that will melt the polar ice caps and flood the world. An uprising begins and Namor is ordered to use Torch to destroy Atlantis, but he defies orders and blows him up on land. The Atlanteans emerge victorious, but, just to be safe, the army nukes Atlantis. But Namor somehow survives, and it doesn't look good for the surface world. This was pretty good. The plot feels rushed, but you do get a sense of how Namor feels living on land and how uneasy he is but how he's trying to make it work. As well as his shock when he realizes what his influence and abandoning his undersea home has lead to. And I like he had a friendship with Human Torch, instead of the two historically being enemies. Artwork's great, writing's great, yeah, recommended. And be sure to check out the original What If issue 41 for a similar and also good Namor story.
