What If Daredevil Had Lived In Feudal Japan? In mid-19th century Japan, a retired ronin refuses to further serve the Giant Shogun, so his messenger the Owl blinds the samurai's son Masahiro. The Shogun promises to restore the child's sight if the ronin will massacre everyone aboard a Western ship carrying guns, where this universe's Matt and Foggy keep watch. The ronin silently kills everyone aboard the ship, except for the traitorous Greek ambassador who escapes to the Giant Shogun, and for Matt, who blows up the ship, destroying all the stock, but also killing Foggy. The ronin returns to the Shogun and demands he heal his son, but is killed by his forces. Who also kills the ambassador and his wife for good measure. The shogun's samurai Stick adopts and trains Masahiro, who somehow has heightened senses that make him untouchable, and Stick uses his influence to get this Devil Who Dares into the Shogun's close circle. Where he also meets Elektra, the daughter of the ambassador, who serves as a geisha, but also secretly fights the Shogun's forces. Giant Shogun learns of Stick's treachery and has him poisoned, and Masahiro and Elektra retaliate by attacking the shogun who's traveling in the emperor's convoy. Giant Shogun escapes and the duo nearly catch up with him, but they're impeded by a Western sharpshooter named Bullseye hired by shogun, who seemingly kills Elektra. Giant Shogun orders Bullseye to also kill Masahiro, but he turns out to be Matt, who heard the shogun admitting to being behind the boat massacre and doesn't lift a finger as the Devil Who Dares throws shogun into a volcano. Elektra turns out to only be grazed, and the two marry, with the emperor opening the country to Western influence. This is an interesting story, even if we never find out why this Daredevil has his powers. But I REALLY don't like the artwork. It looks like they took real photographs and put a million filters over them, making most VERY muddy and hard to even look at. And most of the dialog doesn't fit inside the word balloons, like they had to replace all the wording. If you can look past that, then this is worth a read. And does anyone else feel like they're taking a shot at Batman here?
