What If Xavier's Secret Second Team Had Survived? A new team of X-Men led by Vulcan are sent to rescue the original team from the living island Krakoa, but all but Scott are dead before they get there. Vulcan attacks the island's mind, which sends a wave of radiation over the heroes that drastically increases their power levels, which they use to send the island into space. Xavier marries Moira soon after and retires from leading the X-Men, passing the reins to Vulcan, who has used his power and Xavier's help to create many more teams of heroes and greatly strengthen human mutant relations, becoming the most celebrated heroes on the planet. While Scott becomes a reclusive sculptor, forever haunted by being unable to save his team. After a TV interview, Vulcan returns home, to find Xavier, Scott, and his team waiting for him. Silver Surfer found Krakoa floating in space and brought it back to Earth, where the time-powered Sway scanned it and discovered what really happened. Vulcan arrived in time to save all but Jean Gray, but when he tried to save her anyway, he ended up vaporizing her. Knowing he couldn't let this get out, he killed all the other witnessing X-Men to keep his secret. Vulcan tries to kill the present team as well, but Sway time freezes him and Darwin removes his powers, while Xavier finds Vulcan has also killed many other innocents in fits of rage. As punishment, he's banished to Krakoa, where he's surrounded by nothing but memories of his glory, and, to get food, he's forced to relive that terrible moment over and over again. However, every time he's forced to watch, he becomes more and more dead to shame and empathy. This is one of the best X-Men stories I've ever read! The artwork is fantastic, the writing is incredible, and I love the interview format most of it takes, followed by the gut punch of a twist ending! Greatly recommended and a great Volume 5 closer. Though I can already tell you I have no chance of winning this contest.
