What If Spider-Man Had Rejected the Spider? During the event The Other, Peter rejects his spider side, and he never emerges from his physical and mental cocoon. Thus the Venom symbiote detects his peril, detaches itself from its current host Mac, and makes its way to Peter, where, after a battle of many months, completely takes over Peter's body and mind. The being, calling itself Poison, barges into the Avengers mansion, where Aunt May and Mary Jane are staying. He tries to kill Mary Jane to use her as a shell to reproduce himself, but Logan and Luke Cage intervene. Poison proves to be a match for them, so Mary Jane volunteers to go with him if he leaves them alone, but vows that she'll do everything she can to make his life hell. Poison leaves her alone, but not out of compassion, as he seeks someone who won't fight back. So he goes to the cemetery and digs up Gwen Stacy's corpse, putting her body through a similar metamorphosis. And that's the end. Yeah, this is a very short story, padded with some honestly beautiful but numerous oversized panels. Though what we got was interesting. And very dark, almost on the same level as Issue 88 of What If Volume 2. And I do like Peter David's eloquent writing. Yeah, this is worth at least one read. And makes me wonder what it would look like if a sonic weapon was used on this thing.
