When Ancient Egyptians traveled to Central Africa
Egypt has a long history of interaction with the rest of the African continent.
Today we learn about a journey from Upper Egypt to Central Africa, likely the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The adventure was lead by an Egyptian man named Harkhuf who went to central Africa on behalf of the pharaoh Pepi II in order to trade for various goods such as ebony, ivory, panther skins and more. During his travels he met with pygmies and brought one of these pygmies to the pharaoh. The Egyptian pharaoh at this time was a young boy who wished to see a pygmy do what he called the dances of the gods.
The video begins with a quote and then ends with a discussion of the quote.
I comment on, for example, how the pygmies that were found were likely the Mbuti AKA Bambuti people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And also talk about how instead of wanting to see this man do a dance, that what Pepi should be most excited for is the songs that this man can sing.
Ancient Egypt is the most famous civilization on the continent and so, many people love to learn how it may link with other parts of Africa. So, lets look at ancient Africa and see how Egypt was connected to Sub-Saharan Africa.
