Learn about the architectural technology that went into the construction of the city of Djenne (a.k.a. Jenne) in Mali. The country of Mali is home to the Great Mosque of Djenné which is a giant mud brick building that is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian style of architecture. The first version of the mosque was built around the 13th century, and later rebuilt in the early 20th century. The Great Mosque is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. This area of Mali is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In this video we view Mali via Smithsonian exhibit in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. During the tour we discuss the masons who built the city and the technology they used to create and maintain the architecture.

African architecture comes in numerous beautiful forms across the African continent. The architectural traditions vary greatly across the various regions not only in style but materials as well. For example: the stone pyramids of Egypt in North Africa, the Swahili coral architecture of East Africa, the wooden architecture of Central Africa, and the Sudano Sahelian style of West Africa which uses mud brick.
