Art and Culture of Madagascar - Top Ten African Artworks
The arts of Madagascar have a mix of cultural influences just like people of Madagascar themselves are of mixed heritage. The great island of Madagascar is home to the Malagasy people whose heritage is both from Africa and Asia. Previously we discussed the African and Asian origins of the Malagasy people and even looked into scientific data which show that the people of Madagascar also have DNA in common with the peoples of Polynesia. Besides all that we talked about how specifically the African aspect of the Malagasy history came from the part of Africa north of the Zambezi River and how the Asian part of the Malagasy came from Indonesia; specifically the Indonesian island of Borneo. Plus, we looked at the languages of the island and how it's part of Malayo-Polynesian structure of languages. Which gets its name from the Malay Archipelago and the islands of Polynesia.
This time however the focus is on cultural and artistic diversity. The art featured in today's video include textiles for clothing and other purposes, a face painting tradition used as beauty masks, beautiful household objects, good luck talismans and amulets known as Ody A.K.A. Odi as well as their more potent versions called Sampy, sculptures, and funeral posts such as the famous Aloalo. In addition to all those lovely artworks, we discuss the cultural uses of them and various ceremonies and beliefs surrounding the objects. We, even briefly feature information about Malagasy royalty since African kings and queens so often fund the creation of traditional art objects.
The Malagasy art shown in the video come from various Madagascar peoples including but not limited to: Mahafaly, Sakalava, Bara, Antandroy, and Merina people.
Regions of the world mentioned in this video include: Madagascar, East Africa, Mozambique, Indonesia, Borneo, India, and the Middle East to some extant.
The video is organized into a top ten style video because the Red Spirit Mask channel aims to make educational and academic content that can appeal to average people and by using popular formats like top 10s and tier lists and things of that nature I think it helps to both bring in more viewers and help people to engage more with the educational content. With this and other strategies I hope to give mass appeal to African cultures and other traditional cultures of the world.
Madagascar is unlike anywhere in the world, from epic landscapes to its incredible wildlife. But the people are rarely talked about. I hope this video helps more viewers begin to learn about the extraordinary and beautiful cultures of Madagascar.
