Why Geno is Only a Mii Fighter Costume in Smash
Geno from Super Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo is one of the most requested characters that fans want to see included in the roster in Super Smash Bros Ultimate's Fighters Pass DLC. Unfortunately, as Geno has just been added as a Mii Fighter costume, it seems unlikely that this is going to happen.
This is Geno's second tour of duty as a Mii Fighter, having first appeared alongside Cloud Strife when he was added to Super Smash Bros 4 on 3DS and Wii U. It's somewhat fitting that he returns alongside Sephiroth, Cloud's nemesis.
When previously asked why Geno is a costume in the game, Masahiro Sakurai explained that it's because he personally really likes Geno, and has been wanting him as a fighter in the game since all the way back when they were working on Brawl.
While this Geno costume might not be quite as good as a full character, Sakurai says that, basically, it's the best he can do.
So why didn't Nintendo take the opportunity, when already working with Square-Enix on getting RPG characters into Smash, to put in Geno as well?
The company has been moving away from characters like Geno for some time, both as they stop producing traditional RPGs set in the Mario universe, and as they stop featuring new characters in these games that aren't already canon in the Mario universe. Unfortunately, as the product of a partnership between Square-Enix and Nintendo, Geno is stuck in a kind of limbo where neither company really wants to figure out where they can and can't use him.
This is too bad, but we've got to give props to Masahiro Sakurai for at least trying to find a home for Geno in Smash. His costume may not be much, but at least it's something.
