Why Hyrule's Currency is Called Rupees [Advent Calendar #13]
Yesterday's video slot was stolen by Sephiroth, so here we are on day thirteen of the Advent Calendar, which is all about money.
Why are rupees in the Legend of Zelda games called rupees? According to Shigeru Miyamoto, it's because the name sounds cute. Apparently it has nothing to do with the currency of India, the Rupee.
Except, of course, that over time, the spelling of Zelda's currency has changed from rupies to rupees, suggesting that India did have an impact on the name at some point after all.
See you tomorrow for the next video!
