Here's a part of our recording from Twitch awhile back.

Stygian is rich as can be when it comes to Lovecraftian lore and references, though it's mechanics can be rather obtuse. Still, there's real emphasis on that character-based role-playing this RPG that really helps with the immersion. It's a rather gripping mystery narrative--and though I'm really locked myself into a seemingly linear path here--my gameplay really opened up after this recording, with a set of different quests in different directions and the first movement outside of the city area itself.

I"m also a rather big fan of the artwork here. It's both creepy and creatively stylish, it manages to create an otherworldly yet old pencil drawing type aesthetic that's really hard to pin down.

The game seems designed in that Fallout "many ways to accomplish" any given goal--and I've come to realize that combat is almost the worst resolution for any given matter. Though there are many times where those alternative means aren't really clear. Sometimes whatever other path essentially depends upon having run across or waiting to stumble into some random object discovery, which you still might not even notice as opening a new pathway until you've gone back to discovery new options.

This recording probably caught my most frustrating moments of the game where it felt like there really were streamlining me into one solution for a lot of elements. Especially when I thought defeating the brute with the big hammer would me just TAKE the big hammer and avoid all the hubbub with paying him... but for some reason what should be one of the more obvious solutions wasn't available to me.

Still, after this rough spot I started to realize that the alternative paths presented were often rather opaque rather than presented through dialog 1/2/3 sort of options. You don't necessarily know if there's some other way to accomplish a goal until you've got that means available, so it's often best to just peruse around and do bits of whatever quests at whatever time in hopes of some nice mixing and matching.

There are certainly a good share of flaws in Stygian, but still the sheer enjoyment of the story-based RPG mechanics shines through much more and provides a rather enjoyable game. .
