Zeliard is an unsung classic from some of the earlier days of PC gaming developed by the masterminds at Game Arts and with music by the very talented Mecano Associates (Alisia Dragoon anyone?). It was released around the same time as the first Ys game in Japan but was better in so many ways (at least to me) that it's a freaking crime that this game never went beyond the first game. The artwork is beatiful, the music is impressive, and the game was truly ahead of its time.

It was originally developed in 1987 but was actually released in the U.S. in 1990 (though its very rare to find it these days, and the U.S. boxart alone ensured the game's untimely demise... just look it up). As the story goes, the player controls a knight named Duke Garland, whose task is to save the Kingdom of Zeliard by destroying the evil overlord Jashiin, and recovering the magic jewels called Nine Tears of Esmesanti. You'll learn more if you watch these two intros, since it's pretty long but not particularly eventful. We'll discuss the gameplay in a game sample.
