While Reminiscence does play in quite a few scenes relating to a number a different characters, the scenes with Eric will always be the ones which stand out most to me. Like a lot of people, I wasn't particularly attached to Eric, but his story and emotional journey throughout Zero Time Dilemma are particularly interesting and really well written. There's a strange bittersweet sense of joy which the original piece by Shinji Hosoe creates. It's a feeling which perfectly sums up Eric and his somewhat eerie smile.
I started with a rough idea of what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to split the piece into two halves. The first with a very close feel to the original, but with an emphasis woodwinds and pizzicato strings. I liked the idea of trying having the short upbeat strings, harp and celesta parts contrast with the lighter and more melancholy wind parts. I topped this off with shining glimmers of random bells, crotales and a glockenspiel.
The second half of the piece was where I really wanted to bring out the emotional complexity that the scenes create with soaring legato strings and mournful brass instruments in the background. By 2:13, it actually felt like I was doing another arrangement of Morphogenetic Sorrow! The reference to it in the original is clear but replacing the original instruments with long and sustained notes reminded me a lot of my 2017 arrangement of Morphogenetic Sorrow. I already feel like this, alongside Confession, will feature in Morphogenetic Sorrow 2019 in some form. But hey, I'm thinking way too far in advance!
As always, thanks for watching!
