It feels somewhat strange knowing that this is my third version of Morphogenetic Sorrow already. Time flies! But before creating this, I thought about my past two arrangements of this incredible piece from the Zero Escape series.

Morphogenetic Sorrow 2016 intended to be a fairly close 1:1 recreation of Shinji Hosoe's amazing composition. While I threw in a few more ideas and additional instruments, I focused on staying true to the original and really trying to bring out the melody line with a solo violin.

Morphogenetic Sorrow 2017 was a lot more ambitious. I tried to go for a more unique feel with some original phrases and a more varied harmony to give the piece some flair. Blue Bird Lamentation also features in it.

Now this version of the piece went for something very very different, with a huge focus on bringing together elements from multiple pieces - Interminable Sorrow from Zero Time Dilemma, and Blue Bird Lamentation from Virtues Last Reward. Interminable Sorrow really acts as the secondary focus of the piece after Morphogenetic Sorrow. I wanted the music and the video to primarily focus on the events of Zero Time Dilemma. But that aside, I also tried to develop an original melody line inspired by all three pieces. It begins at 1:00 and incorporates elements from the three pieces mentioned.

I then thought of ways to really express the intensity and significance of the piece across all three games. Spiccato string parts, choir parts, solo vocal parts and a key change all helped to achieve what I was going for.

I've noticed that each subsequent Morphogenetic Sorrow rendition is unintentionally longer than the last. I'm curious as to how long next years version will be, and what it will sound like for that matter! Then again, I already have some ideas for a very unusual Morphogenetic Sorrow 2019.

Thanks for watching and Season's Greetings!
