#1047 Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Wii) Bosses (1/3): Yami (3rd form) playthrough.

It’s time to continue the Versus series with the title everyone forgets. In the West, anyway. Also, woot, first and only Wii game I get to cover.
I have absolutely no sentiment towards to game, which will probably surprise none of you. TvC came across to me as too gimmicky at the time to actually buy at the time; a brand new Versus title, after 9 years (I think?), released exclusively to the Wii and featuring a franchise of characters I had (and still have) absolutely no knowledge of. I passed it over at the time, and if it wasn’t for making these vids would have probably never even bothered playing it. Indeed, I can see why Capcom was reluctant to bring this to the West in the first place, given its niche appeal here. It’s worth noting however that Tatsunoko anime were actually pretty popular in Continental Europe from what I’ve read; anime was translated for countries such as France, Spain and Italy long before it as a medium took off in the USA or indeed in the UK. The fact that those countries tend to be much lighter on censorship also probably helped; the UK still hasn’t quite cast-off its censor-happy ethos from the 1980s, with even recent cartoons such as Regular Show and Steven Universe having scenes superfluously censored, for whatever reason.
Tatsunoko comes across to me as the Japanese equivalent of Marvel, in much the same way that Studio Ghibli is effectively the Japanese equivalent of Disney, and so a crossover title with Capcom characters did make a lot of sense. Tatsunoko vs Capcom is damn good, too. It’s a Versus title, so you’d expect it to be competent, but I think it says a lot for a game where I don’t know half the characters but can still enjoy the crap out of it. This game was actually made by Eighting, makers of the Bloody Roar series as well as that decent Fate fighting game I covered a while back, and they did a pretty damn good job here. It’s worth noting that TvC actually exists in two versions; the original Cross Generation of Heroes version, which was released in Japan but not in the west, and the updated Ultimate All-Stars version here which was released in all territories. The only major difference really worth noting is that the four hidden characters in Cross Generation are innately playable (although one character was actually removed for this game, for whatever reason), and Ultimate All-Stars introduces five new hidden characters.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom returns to the 2 v 2 fighting system last seen in Marvel vs Capcom 1. Personally, I’m fine with this, as I was for MvC Infinite. Tag-teams and 2 v 2 are kind of my preference when it comes to this stuff, but that’s probably because of being influenced by wrestling I suspect. The tag-team just makes more sense than the 3 v 3 thing to me, although I still enjoy the 3 v 3 Marvel titles.
Character-wise, TvC definitely feels more adventurous than previous titles. For a start, the game also has two giant characters, who the player is able to select instead of picking two individual characters. Both giant characters also serve as a potential mid-boss in arcade mode, which I thought was a good idea. On the Capcom roster you have a number of interesting choices, such as Megaman Legends Megaman, classic Roll, Batsu from Rival Schools, a character from Onimusha of all things and even Viewtiful Joe from his eponymous series. There’s also two brilliant hidden Capcom characters in this game, but I’ll get them when I move onto hidden characters.
