A playthrough of the hidden bosses Nakoruru and Morrigan in the arcade version of Capcom’s Capcom vs. SNK 1.

Nakoruru and Morrigan definitely stick out in this game for a number of reasons. They’re the only really unique bosses, and when you’ve played this game to death seeing their portraits or their character models for the first time is quite satisfying, considering how samey the arcade mode in this game is. Nakoruru also got a brand new sprite for this game, which looks fantastic, while Morrigan…well, as always, is just left with her archaic Darkstalkers sprite instead. I get that it’s supposed to be an in-joke of sorts, but to me it just proves they were never really sure what they were doing with that franchise.

Morrigan is pretty much the shotoclone of Darkstalkers, so while she has a couple of quirky attacks she still feels very familiar in terms of playstyle. Nakoruru on the other hand is quite unique; she has these sliding knife attacks which have a tendency to get the opponents off-guard, as well as a unique stance we she hangs from the talons of her falcon and can follow it up with a few different moves. She’s unique if a little finnicky (which is how I’d describe most SNK characters, really), but on the whole I think she makes for a good addition. Morrigan isn’t anything too special gameplay-wise, but given that she’s the sole representative for Darkstalkers here (everyone else Capcom wise is from Street Fighter, if memory serves), I’m glad she was included all the same, and both of them definitely makes for refreshing mid-bosses.

Next up, time for a couple more redone vids, as we return to Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
