REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Ah, the familiar world of scantily clad Japanese schoolgirls, bearing arms against hoards of bizzare looking enemies in a mishmash of slapstick comedy and borderline perversion. Well I guess it might be familiar to many hardened Anime fans, though personally I never really got the appeal? Still, who am I to complain, past the questionable exterior there's actually a pretty enjoyable beat em up to be played.
As with many of its ilk, it's fairly obvious a Western release wasnt high on the agenda during programming, which of course plays to the credit what's a charmingly unique experience. The games artstyle is certainly eye-pleasing & cutscene animations are fantastic. The English translation appears to have succeeded in keeping a good level of humour in the story also.
The wierd and wonderful footprint of the 'Super Famicom elusive' is undeniable, via the games bizzare rolecall of enemies & bosses as is the somewhat janky controls! You move okay, but the progression in speed from fast to super sonic, by simply continuing to move forward without stopping, is annoying. And like a certain blue Hedgehog, the temptation to tear through levels, is met almost always with disappointment!
Your 3 offensive powers, who's strength is determined by a perpetually refilling 'Psi' metre, offers just enough variety to keep gameplay from being painfully repetitive (just), but there acquisition is confusing & the health damaging special power is understandably useless!
Ignoring Kendo, where Kabin's Rage really picks up, is through the horrendous inability to turn around quickly (preferring instead to Moonwalk), coupled with the, surprisingly very challenging boss encounters!
This is not a game you'll be beating first time, boss fights demand plenty of practice especially given the final stage is just the dreaded, level long boss rush!
Understanding & manipulating the fact that you're invincible for a second whenever damaging an enemy is important, though timing attacks to reap benefits is never exactly easy!
Overall not a bad addition to the collection but this little number is never going to be rewriting the rulebook on the genre.
