REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Once again Konami lend their name to a breathtakingly good Mech action platformer they had nothing to do with! Much like NCS Corp's 'Cybernator', Konami vacuumed up applause outside Japan for these games despite only being responsible for offshore publishing.
If you're a fan of LucasArts games like me, I'm sure expectations is high! Metal Warriros doesnt disappoint, to me this really is one of the best games on the system! There's only one tiny drawback, price!
Expensive games are hardly rare in the retro gaming world, but there's expensive and then there's EXPENSIVE! Metal Warriors sadly falls into the latter camp, isolating it from the large majority of gamers, which is a crying shame given its simply outstanding gameplay automatically qualifying it for hidden gem status!
Similarities with Cybernator continue into gameplay, leading many to believe it actually was the genuine successor. That isn't true but Cybernator's positives are only strengthend, with stage exploration greatly enhanced, more varied gameplay and most entertaining of all; a multitude of very different Mechs to control. The ability to exit and switch Mechs on the fly is a wonderful addition, adding a new dimension to gameplay as you anxiously fly around in a weakened microscopic human form between Mechs, in a fashion reminiscent of Blaster Master.
The attention to detail is incredible. I didnt think environmental destruction could be so impressive on the Snes. Story & stage objectives are creative and engaging, mechanics are fun & varied and the animation (particularly for cutscenes) is practically a visual orgasm! I guess the only drawback is difficulty. Yeah its LucasArts, they dont do easy games!
The exclusion of a password system feels very unfair. While only 9 stages, many are painfully long with many complex sections. Progression later on requires constant trail & error with threat levels on permanent red alert. That said, gameplay always feels fair, and tension truly does echo the feeling of war.
I could never justify the price I paid for this game but I can at least confirm it's well worth playing, which certainly is not always the case!
