-If there's one thing my many years in retro gaming have taught me, it's that you're never too old to keep learning! Whatever 'final final' wishlists I create, it's only a matter of time before new additions arrive. Incantation certainly would never have made it's way onto such a list had it not been for a glowing review by supporter @cachait0 over on his excellent page. The fact I took the review at face value and failed to notice the clear level of irony is besides the point 🤭😁. Sadly I didnt however! Oh well!
Well, having long prepared for the worst in playing this title, I have to say I was considerably more pleased with the game than I'd expected. Dont let the 5/10 score deceive, I'd been prepared for something in the region of a 2, so a solid 5 was a pleasant surprise.
Fact is, what the game lacks in some areas it makes up for in others. No one can deny it's good looks. The cutesy graphics work and your child magician is actually quite endearing. It's a good looking game with a nice simple premise of collecting 3 tokens, hidden within a stage in order to gain access to the boss. Stages, though short, offer multiple levels to explore which delivers some much needed variety.
Unfortunately the accolades end there! Ignoring the often questionable edge detection, some of the basic fundamentals of gameplay really suffer. With no spells to play with, a small selection of fire powerup options breath some life into play, but with no way to cycle your inventory, replacing some powerups can actually be more of a hindrance & leave no option to switch! While stages are fairly enjoyable to play, boss encounters are largely some of the worst I've ever seen, proving both extremely easy and extraordinarily lazy! Infact the overall ease is another problem for the game, offering no difficulty options at startup has to be another fundamental no no.
Had preconceptions not already been so low, it's fair to assume disappointment may have been higher, instead I'm left feeling surprisingly satisfied with the experience despite all its flaws. Its certainly not a game worthy of a reasonable price tag, but for a freebie? Eh, you can probably do worse?
