REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-It's not often adaptations of popular TV and movie cartoons find themselves on home console without the aid of usual suspects like Konami, Capcom or Virgin studios, yet here, the seemingly forgot mouse franchise 'An American Tail' sees its 2nd installment brought to the Snes by none other than Hudson Soft.
Now I've plenty of love for Hudson; a rich library of very enjoyable titles litters their long history but in amongst the smooth is nevertheless the occasional bit of rough, & sadly Fievel Goes West offers very little to polish.
In fairness the game does look outstanding. Hudson's trademark of large, attractive sprites continues, though a sacrifice in edge detection plays a factor. Pretty or not, enemies offer almost no satisfaction in dispatch, given their often tedious attack patterns and questionable hitboxes. Even your gun provides plenty to be frustrated about with its often snail like fire rate.
It's the kind of game that demonstrates all the hallmarks of 'bad-NES' besides the difficulty! After learning just how much hand holding is apparent throughout, any real jepody is removed. Easy games dont necessarily make bad ones and just because something might predominantly be aimed at a much younger audience doesn't mean it requires a lobotomy. On the contrary the NES's Duck Tales for example manages to balance an easy game with an extremely fun and engaging one. Fievel very much doesnt and the easy gameplay only further adds to the disappointment factor.
Problems with hitboxes, unfair enemy spawns, beginner traps and all the old favourites all play a part but the endless array of extra lives via gold coins renders deaths little more than minor distractions.
Very simple boss encounters prolong the thirst for challenge even more and tho surely very few would face the cold slap of a Game Over screen playing this, the satisfaction upon completing it is hardly something worth framing!
Sometimes looks can be enough, often they arent! Fievel is definitely very much the latter, boasting almost nothing to compete with the systems other, far better, cartoon franchise imaginings. Little on the NES for that matter too!
