REVIEW (Originall posted on Instagram)
#135 Asterix & Obelix (Normal)
-What! Is that it? All those toys out the pram & 9 days later you come back like nothings happened? Yeh, I guess that's about the shape of things 😂 (reference to my story post moaning about how hard this was)
Look I'm a fairly rounded guy but I'm also human so forgive me 4 letting emotion occasionally boil over. Was this the "game that broke me?" Lord no! It's barely a drop in the ocean, but its combination of Infuriating moments & teeth grinding cheapness was simply poorly timed. I have no intention of stopping this challenge, I just want to manage expectations.
Anyway Asterix & Obelix; another stab at translating the wonderful world of French comic book classic 'Asterix' into what every fan wanted; ie not a game that relays almost exclusively on jumping pits & beating up bats, like its predecessor!
Well Infrogrames roll the dice a 2nd time & as before they deliver a beautiful looking game that does more than justice to its routes, whilst helplessly falling foul to the 'looks over gameplay' play style we've covered oh so many times before.
Are we in 'Pugley's Scavenger Hunt' territory? Errr no! Come on, get serious! We are however still dealing with unfair hitboxes, leaps of faith, unavoidable damage and endless beginner traps.
The novelty of Obelix being a playable character unfortunately quickly wears thin as you realise, despite the height advantage for smashing boxes, his extra girth renders him twice as easy a target for inevitable damage. So fuck Obelix and stick with Mr Reliable; Asterix, if you wish to retain any sanity playing this game.
A password every 4 stages does reward patient players cos extra lives are plentiful for those willing to invest the time to properly explore.
Still, garbage like the "Olympics" level, maybe a novelty, but playing without a turbo controller is simply painful beyond belief.
What initially appears to be a simple Beat em Up , quickly becomes something far more mentally demanding.
Is it better than the original? Meh? Iron out its shortcomings and yes, certainly. Alas many original faults remain and with additional extras, the balance of 'great looking game' to 'average gameplay' isnt so easy to justify!
