REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Raise your hands those who knew of a 2nd Castlevania game on the Snes? Beginning my retro gaming journey some 15 years back, it was certainly news to me! Luckily even the knowledgeable back then knew education surrounding the history of its existence was sufficient enough to detour many (myself included) from its incredibly pricey acquisition!
It's hardly a secret nowadays of course to know that this was infact a heavily altered port of the PC Engine CD's (T-16); Rondo of Blood. Retitled 'Dracula X' for its NTSC Snes release, the decision to rebrand yet again for Europe seems a strange one.
What's slightly clearer, is the obvious path the game treads in, proving an adequate preamble to the Playstation's infamous Symphony of the Night!
Besides playing as Richter; the artstyle, enemies & even climatic final showdown all featured ln the future installment! But does it justify such greatness by being competitive?
The answer is; Not Really!
Vampire Kiss succeeds in delivering a decent Castlevania game but its failure for me comes from the other games around it! Besides stepbacks in combat control: returning to single forward whipping as opposed to the 8-way action of 4, not enough has been done to correct the more frustrating elements such as stairs & knockback! Sub weapons have taken a welcome boost with a fun special attack added & I do appreciate the ability to choose to keep or ditch new additions.
The difficulty is steep in places but the addition of infinite continues & passwords for every stage balances frustrations.
Bosses mostly present mild concern, but Draucla... Wow, playing the fight on those small platforms, given the infamousy of how bad the jump & knockback mechanics are, screams of Konami's middle finger saying:
"Yeah we're aware of the less than perfect elements, now we've gonna magnify those shortcomings in the final fight purely cos we can, Enjoy!"
A lesser port it maybe, but being sandwiched between arguably the series best 2 offerings, will always be its biggest mistake. Besides many championing Rondo of Blood as their fav, for me, nothing beats Castlevania 4!...
