Here is my Full playthrough of Batman Returns done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!

-TWO WEEKS OF HELL! At the hands of Batman Returns? No, actually more the work of Influenza, Meningitis & botched surgery but hey Batman Returns played it's part, make no mistake this is a tough beat em up!

Konami's trademark of delivering quality gameplay with balanced challenge is still apparent, but a less palatable dose of cheapness does lurk behind the occasional corner, which combined with some incredibly unforgiving boss encounters, registers a higher than usual measurement on the rage gauge than I normally expect from Konami.

One thing that cannot be questioned is how incredible his game looks. An almost perfect translation of the comic book style delivery of Tim Burton's movie is a delight to play. As is the combat, which when played in 60hz is incredibly fast and frantic, delivering a true arcade experience to what's actually a totally original game.

The inclusion of a stun mechanic via the Batarang combined with the variety in combat, especially throws and the ability to smash enemies into the environment (as well as each other), is both unique & highly satisfying.
The rolecall of baddies is also a highlight, with none feeling like photocopies and each presenting their own challenges.

Essentially the beat em up stages are near perfect, but the console setting seems to demand beat em ups deliver more variety to gameplay, so the addition of some more clunky platforming & driving stages accompany the action. Bad? No, Konami are too experienced for that, but these stages certainly temper the fun factor some while succeeding in dating the experience through today's glasses too.

The real challenge of course comes from the many bosses. A few fall foul of more traditional beat em up strategy, but Catwoman & The Penguin prove incredibly tough encounters, each able to tear through your health in seconds.

Were it not for some distinctly unfair moments like enemies ability to spam damage you when you're knocked down, I'd rate this higher, but combined with the difficulty of certain bosses, I have to say the fun factor was damaged slightly.
