-Nustled in among a stream of sport titles, Human Entertainment produced two highly original action titles, namely The Firemen(game #6) and this 'Escape the Titantic' survival game.
Presumably to mildly reduce any offence, the actual ship is called the Lady Crithania, but for all intensive purposes, in both look and setting, its the Titanic!
Given a choice of 4 different characters to play as, each starting in different areas of the ship, soon after beginning, a huge wave hits the ship and knocks her upside down. Prior damage means a hole will allow water to penetrative the ship.
Once gameplay begins you have exactly 1 hour to exit the ship via the Boiler room located at the base (now top) of ship. The journey there is an incredibly tough one thanks largely to the very impressive Snes Mode 7 hardware's manipulation of graphics. Your entire enviroment randomly tilts along a 180 degree access simulating the ships increased intake of water. At 33mins in, the ship breaks in two resulting in random rotation events increasing and the angle progressing to a full 360 degrees. It brings a highly original dynamic to platforming yet unexplored at the time.
Other events such as electrical failures, falling furniture, random fires all contribute to the chaos but the biggest obstacle in survival is simply navigating this monstrous ship. 3 huge floors are divided up by endless staircases and doors that further disorientation with the hundreds of rooms to explore. Trust me it takes many, many playthroughs to find a successful route to safety.
Besides saving your own skin, the games many endings are decided based on how many other souls you save. Sadly despite the wealth of replay value this offers, it seems it was a little too much to expect the AI to be able to handle the impressive enviroment manipulation without issue. Far too often you'll find them glitching into walls, unable to achieve simple jumps vital to survival, or equally hurl themselves to their death as they mistimed said jump. Making it out the game with AI intact really is this games true challenge. Alas my goal is simply to beat the games. Hopefully I'll revisit this one day. It was fun.
