Here is part one of my full playthrough of Lufia 2 done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!
Follow me on instagram @Cabin_game_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Yes it has been awhile since uploading a new game review. Well the culmination of life with two young daughters plays a role as does a new job but the biggest time restriction is simply that these old RPGs demand some serious man hours, 22 hours to be extact!
I've mentioned before that one obvious curse of entertaining challenges like these is that the sheer volume of games to conquer chips away at your patience. The seeemingly endless supply of time I once enjoyed feels far more claustrophobic and games that prove more than a weeks worth of grinding to beat often become more chore than challenge.
But there are exceptions and Lufia 2 is certainly one of them! Great RPG's should remain timeless, classics like Chrono Trigger, Earthbound the Gaia Trilogy all offer a rich reward still today and while Lufia 2 falls just short of that high pinnacle, the game easily cements itself into the 'Well worth a play' category.
Fundamentals are well designed and balanced. Grinding isnt intensive, weapons and magic are fun to use, puzzle solving remains on the fun side of challenging and the story isnt half bad either. Given the decision to stay within the same tired clichè of 'boys saves world from destruction in freudal Japan', it manages to go that little bit further into character depth most others don't. The relationship between the leads is genuinely interesting (even if they are the world's worst parents) and most of the supporting cast (besides Tia) manage their moments to shine too. Let's also celebrate the wonderful juxtaposition of Lufia 2 ending at the beginning of Lufia 1! Leaving the player with the dilemma of whether to play them in chronological or release order? Either way it's fair to say the first game pales in comparison gameplay wise.
For all the positives, it's true it suffers a little with a 'rinse & repeat' approach, especially after midway when the story lulls briefly. Still for those prepared for longer engagement with a game, there really is little here to disappoint. A very good RPG with alot more to offer than its predecessor.
