#142 IMPERIUM - FULL PLAYTHROUGH (Easy) - Beating My SNES Games
Here is my full playthrough of Imperium done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!
Okay so the intention of the challenge was to only beat the starting settings but Normal mode on this game is so brutal I just thought screw it! I've suffered the insufferable pain of beating all 234 NES games without any difficulty options, and hell i've done 141 Snes games. I think having now beating this on Easy, I probably could do this on Normal but screw it, life's too short and i'm enjoying the challenge without it becoming too horrid of a chore.
Follow me on instagram @Cabin_game_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Easy? Yes, I guess I've failed to meet the challenge guidelines of beating each game on their starting settings, but have you tried beating this game on Normal? I've taken down the majority of shumps on the system, even so far as beating Super R-type on Normal (a step above its starting settings), simply to avoid the bad taste of 'Easy' being in my mouth. However Imperium is a sizeable cut above the rest, boasting fiercely more aggressive & high speed gameplay than most the library, not shy to trailblaze the path if Bullet Hell games that would soon follow.
On Normal mode especially, by stage 3 the amount of enemy projectiles reaches staggering levels, leaving you with nothing to do but laugh at the ridiculousness of the challenge. Pause buffering seems almost impossible to avoid as your only weapon of survival. That's not to say your intended weaponry isnt impressive, one of the games most rewarding aspects comes from its array of firepower. The 4 options of wave, laser, multi-directional and good old Rapid-fire may not seem that original at first but their steroid fuelled increase apon levelling up is well worth the grind.
The fact you're blessed with 5 hits may seem generous but the reality of surviving the onslaught without taking damage will soon appear laughable as you reach the later stages, no less from the many incredibly unfair mini-bosses, I'm sure designed to force you to downgrade weaponry.
Health and weapon upgrades are rewarded after destroying numerous targets but taking damage resets the counter, punishing the inexperienced player for mistakes by further handicapping their chances.
Despite the difficulty Imperium is both a fun and solid shump that offers fast, fluid gameplay with almost no slowdown and plenty of memorable boss encounters. It isnt going to challenge the system greats but its certainly a worthy addition to any collection, if you fancy a challenge!
As the dust settles on this 'victory', the temptation to dive back into the torture for Normal mode is strong, but right now what I need is a palette cleanser. Unfinished business? I think so!
