-If Starfox left you thinking 3D on the Snes was limited only to geometry avoidance, then think again! The 3DFX chip, responsible for a noticeable price increase for any cartridge that carried it, proves its worth with a racing game that truly feels a generation ahead of its competition.
Developed by the same team that created Starfox, the highly impressive visuals really are groundbreaking. The extra year over Starfox shows, with shape and shading more realistic than before. Its frankly a marvel to see this on a 16 bit cartridge, I'd argue it looks better than some 32bit games.
Part of Starfox's success came from the wonderful gameplay, story and loveable rolecall of characters. Sadly Stunt Race fails to deliver much beyond the basics, with a single player mode consisting of competing in 'Speed Mode'; a race environment where you need to finish 4 tracks, without running out of time whilst competing with 3 other AI cars. 'Stunt Mode'; where you need to collect 40 stars and reach the end before the timer runs out. There's also a "Battle Mode' for multiplaye which sadly I wasn't able to test..🦗🦗
The 3 vehicle options offer quite different gameplay to control, though I personally found the 4WD to be the easiest for competing in everything despite its slow top speed.
Gameplay definitely demands practice. The delay in control input has a constant effect on your cornering. Far too often you'll find yourself doing a 180 or missing a powerup as you overuse the L&R button attempting to finesse a corner. The timer leaves little room for error in later tracks and missing a boost poweup; leaving your turbo empty, can be fatal to success. Still the addition of 3 lives plus a bonus round offering time increases is enough to balance the challenge across the 4 races of each difficulty nicely.
With only 4 Stunt tracks & 8 Race tracks,
Stunt Race has a somewhat sparce feel. What there is shines but the feels unfinished, the game likely opens up in mulitplayer but perhaps storage limitations on the snes play a role. Regardless, the impressive looks more than prove you can produce pleasing 3D without the need to double your Bits.
