2018 Volvo XC60: First Drive - Video
16The Volvo XC60 is new for 2018, and we're getting our first hands-on look at the redesigned midsize crossover. So far we're very impressed.
The 2018 Volvo XC60 now shares some of its basic structure with the larger, pricier XC90, and the tangible result is that the XC60 feels just like a slightly smaller, more nimble version of the 3-row XC90.
The exterior look is familiar, but now the XC60 has a more substantial appearance that comes off as a legitimate luxury crossover. Inside, it's the same story with Volvo's excellent Sensus system, a roomy back seat, a Bowers and Wilkins sound system and lots of premium materials and textures backed up with modern design elements.
You also get safety features like Pilot Assist and a new oncoming lane mitigation that helps prevent head-on collisions.
There's an R-Design version for those who want a little extra attitude with their Volvo crossover.
The XC60 gets the same engine choices as its big brother. Yes, you can get the same 316-horsepwer turbo and supercharged engine in the smaller, lighter XC60.
Acceleration is effortless, and there's lots of power at any speed -- the cabin remains quiet even on the highway. The XC60 also feels sharper in the corners than other midsize SUVs. BMW's X3 might be the only exception, but the Volvo tops it in so many other ways -- especially when it comes to tech and highway comfort.
The XC60 feels versatile -- it's right at home on open, twisty roads and in suburban neighborhoods and more crowded city centers.
The starting price for a 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum is about $42,000, and a top-of-the-line T6 Inscription is $50,000 -- but there are a lot of packages and options in between. The T8 hybrid is more -- it tops out at roughly $57,000.
