And, of course, stumble upon some of what the author really likes, which is relationships between women. That and a few other things are said to be sort of her hallmark or signature on something.

It's probably good that, alongside our stalwart AI companions, not all of the story of this ship is miserable grim darkness. That would cause numbness and tuning out rather quickly, if both of those elements weren't there, but Christine Love balances it between telling a gut-wrenching tragic narrative, and keeping us emotionally invested and even content or happy.
