3D DOT GAME HEROES | Full Game Walkthrough | No Commentary
44Today I am going to archive a very special game that I know many people have forgotten ever existed. Back in the days of the PlayStation 3 there was a game that was Sony's answer to The Legend of Zelda series in the form of 3D Dot Game Heroes. The style of game was reminiscent of old Zelda games on the NES, the SNES and the Gameboy.
The art style itself was even inspired by 8-bit character and object sprites and now beautifully presented in 3D. The result is a very unique game that is a love letter to the old Legend of Zelda games, but also RPG games in general from the late and early 90's. There are references to Dragonquest, Final Fantasy and more.
You play as a young hero who gets tasked with completing six dungeons spread throughout the land to collect orbs in order to defeat an evil wizard. The premise is super simple, but it works and the graphics of the game are so charming. The world is colorful, vibrant and the music is also gorgeous and fits the tone of the retro aesthetic.
The game is actually created by From Software, though Miyazaki himself was not involved. There are references to Demon's Souls and other From Software titles and it is awesome to see the company's roots before what they are known for best.
There are a lot of things to discover and collect and you can even get different endings. The game never gets too difficult or frustrating and the flow is always nice. There actually is a really cool and unique mechanic where your sword can be upgraded to be so huge that it fills the entire screen. This only lasts while you are at full health, but can give you a great advantage during dungeons and boss fights.
The game is very difficult to find nowadays, but I was lucky to find a second hand game during a convention in absolute prime condition. Therefore I am glad and proud to finally archive this forgotten classic that deserves to be remembered.
